On Saturday, Sept. 23, several locations in Magnolia will get makeovers between 9 a.m. and noon. Making Magnolia Blossom (MMB) will have at least five different projects going during Big Splash Saturday. Online registrants can choose to register as individuals or groups at magnoliabossom.org/register. Sign-in is at 8:30 a.m. in the big parking lot across from the front of the Reynolds Center at Southern Arkansas University, and volunteering begins at 9 a.m. MMB equipment and supplies are to be returned at noon.
“You can register online, see where we need volunteers, and you can pick a project. We are inviting the community to come and join us,” SAU Campus and Community Welfare Coordinator Deana Taylor said. “They can also just show up on Saturday at 8:30, sign in, and we’ll give them their choice of projects. We’ve got the equipment, supplies, tools. We’re going to work for three hours. If anyone needs transportation to the areas we’re going to work on, we’re going to provide transportation as well.”
A massive effort will be made at Magnolia’s West Side playground (corner of Boundary and Monroe Streets). Volunteers will paint playground equipment, the basketball court, and the parking railing, as well as picking up lawn debris, leveling the parking area, and hanging signage. MMB hopes to have 75 volunteers for the work at West Side playground. For anyone who doesn’t sign in across from the Reynolds Center or online, Taylor said to “just show up” at West Side.
At Southern Christian Mission on W. Monroe, at least four volunteers will paint doors. The Boys & Girls Club of Magnolia on Hollensworth will have projects available that may include yard work, painting, and cleaning. They hope to have 20 volunteers. CCAPS Animal Shelter needs about five volunteers for mowing and weed-eating. Compassion’s Foundation needs about five volunteers to varnish a wooden fence.
