LETTER TO THE EDITOR

For some time I have been bothered by a billboard that stands in our city. Not being able to let this go, I decided to write this letter.

The billboard stands at the east entrance to Atwood’s on Hwy. 79, facing south. It is red with a bust of the Statue of Liberty, with a caption which reads LAND OF THE FREE AND HOME OF THE BUD!

In my opinion, this is very degrading and disrespectful to the men and women who have and now serve in our armed forces. The freedom we enjoy as a nation today has been paid with great price and sacrifice. I’m somewhat familiar with this, as four of my five brothers served — two Army, two Air Force — one of them in Korea, one in Vietnam.

Our veterans and those who actively serve today deserve our honor and respect. Advertise and sell alcohol if you must, but please let’s not allow our nation or our city be represented as the home of the Bud! We will, after all, one day be judged as one nation under God.
