Southern Arkansas takes care of Tigers on the court

Southern Arkansas placed four players in double figures on Thursday night and the Muleriders led wire-to-wire in a 73-64 Great American Conference victory over East Central. The win moves the Muleriders into a five-way tie for fifth place in the GAC standings with seven games remaining before the postseason tournament.

At 3 p.m. today, the Muleriders will take on the league-leading Southeastern Oklahoma Savage Storm at the W.T. Watson Center.

Southern Arkansas (9-12, 7-8 GAC) was led by Carel Ray Jr. 18 points, while Cedric Garrett finished with 14. Magnolia's Nevi Tell provided 12 and Anthony Igiede delivered 10 points.

The Muleriders shot 63.6% from the floor in the first half to build a 10-point lead, but the Tigers hung around and used a key three with under five seconds remaining in the half to cap a 53% shooting effort from beyond-the-arc in the opening 20 minutes. SAU shot a dozen more free throws and made eight more than the Tigers who made just one trip to the stripe in the first half.

SAU grew its advantage to as much as 19 points in the second half, and the Tigers would only manage to cut the deficit to eight with just under two minutes to play.

The SAU Lady Muleriders advance to 10-11 on the season and earn their first conference victory since defeating East Central back in early January.

Diamond Morris led in scoring with a 13-point effort and Addy Tremie followed with a 10. Tequaza Chambers and Sihirah Reese had eight apiece, while Jessica Clemons grabbed a team-high 10 rebounds.

Southern Arkansas used a quick 18-7 lead to take advantage of the contest early and led 33-27 at the half. In the third period, the SAU.

In the final quarter, SAU acquired its third 11-point lead of the evening at 54-43, but would nearly surrender it as the Lady Tigers rattled off a 10-1 run to make it 55-53. From then on, Southern Arkansas would hold ECU to their 53 points and tack on four of their own to reach a final score.

The Lady Muleriders are also home today at 1 p.m. against Southeastern Oklahoma State.

Other SAU sports

TENNIS: The women's tennis team returned to action this weekend in Arkadelphia with a pair of matches today. Southern Arkansas takes is scheduled to matchup against No. 23 Angelo State at 11 a.m. and battle Delta State at 3 p.m. on the Ouachita Baptist campus.

BASEBALL: Weather permitting, Southern Arkansas is scheduled to host Maryville of Missouri today at Goodheart Field. The two teams were to have played a doubleheader on Friday and had a single game set for today at noon.

SOFTBALL: The Lady Muleriders will compete in the Alvy Early Memorial Classic in Bentonville. They were scheduled to battle Drury at 11 a.m. and Wayne State at 1:30 p.m. on Friday, followed by Washburn at 11 a.m. and No. 8 UT-Tyler at 1:30 p.m. today.

TRACK & FIELD: The men's and women's track & field teams are in Pittsburg, KS, at Piottsburg State for the Ninth Annual Gorilla Indoor Classic hosted in the Robert W. Plaster Center. Today's action will begin in the late morning with track events resuming at 11 a.m. with field events starting at noon.
