Southern Arkansas University and Mulerider Athletics have announced that an open air, multipurpose facility will be constructed on campus with plans to break ground this spring. The announcement comes after private funds were provided for the project which will provide an immediate impact to over 450 student-athletes, coaches and administrators that make up the 14 athletic programs at SAU.

“This facility has been a goal for many years and with it now becoming a reality, it’s like a dream come true,” remarked SAU Director of Athletics Steve Browning. “To be able to give our programs a place to practice when the weather is not cooperating will certainly help us to continue to raise the bar of excellence in Mulerider Athletics. I cannot say “Thank You” enough to those involved that have helped get us to where we are today in regards to this transformational facility that will have a positive impact on Mulerider Athletics for years to come!”

The 175’ wide by 190’ foot long by 50’ foot tall facility, which will be located directly to the east of Wilkins Stadium at Rip Powell Field, will feature a 60-yard turfed field with field markings for multiple sports and state-of-the-art LED lighting. The timeline for completion includes having the facility ready for use when student-athletes return in the fall of 2021.

The total cost of the facility is $1.45 million. To date, the University has raised over $1.2 million through gifts and pledges, and the new multipurpose facility will be entirely funded through private support from alumni and friends. Donors to the project will be recognized, including facility naming rights, once construction is complete.

Additionally, the project is a part of the University’s Love and Loyalty Campaign, an effort which is in its fifth and final year seeking to raise $22.275 million. Ensuring that our student-athletes and coaches have the facilities and resources needed to be successful is a priority of this campaign.
