SAU falls to Angelo State in tennis, but will host Harding on Saturday

SAU sophomore Serena Gill waits on serve during a match. She and the Lady Muleriders lost last weekend to No. 13 Angela State, but will play at home for the first time Saturday against the Harding Lady Bison at 1 p.m.

Southern Arkansas and No. 13 Angelo State battled inside Ouachita’s David Ward Tennis Center on Sunday and it was the Belles that claimed a 5-2 win over the Lady Muleriders.

SAU suffered defeat in the doubles action and lost at the first three single lines although sophomore Angela Vargas carried ASU’s Valentina Gonzalez to a third set before falling 7-5, 3-6, 2-6. Freshmen Kalley Smith and Sarah Roy won at doubles No. 2 with a 6-3 decision over the Belles’ Zoe Gubbels and Virginie Becht.

Sophomore Serena Gill topped Gubbels at No. 4 with a 6-4, 7-5 showing and freshman Honoka Yoshimura defeated Maria Delgadillo 6-4, 0-6, 10-4 at No. 5.

Southern Arkansas prepares for its first home match of the season as Harding comes to Magnolia on Saturday, February 27. First-serve from the Live Oaks Tennis Courts is scheduled for 1 p.m.
