Magnolian, 18, accused of fleeing, hitting restaurant

— Staff Report

Last week, investigators with the Magnolia Police Department reportedly identified the driver of the vehicle that crashed in the Corner Clubhouse Restaurant on the Square early on June 28.

He was Detaevias Cooper, 18 of Magnolia, police said, and investigators were able to secure an arrest warrant for him.

Later on the afternoon of June 29, Cooper turned himself into the Magnolia Police Department. He’s facing charges of fleeing by vehicle and first-degree criminal mischief.

Authorities said the investigation is still ongoing and anyone with information is encouraged to contact the Magnolia Police Department’s Criminal Investigation Division.

In a previous report, authorities said a Nissan Altima crashed through the Corner Clubhouse while attempting to evade police.

On Sunday, Magnolia police officers attempted a traffic stop on a maroon colored Nissan Altima around 12:40 a.m. near the intersection of Jefferson Davis and North Vine streets.

The report said, the Altima then traveled southbound on North Washington Street before entering the one-way portion of Washington near the Square on the wrong side of the road. It was reported that the suspects attempted to make a left-hand turn but instead crashed the car through the north wall of the restaurant.

The vehicle slammed into the brick and glass wall of the restaurant before coming to a stop with half of the car inside the business. The two men inside the vehicle fled south toward Calhoun Street as the pursuing officer tried to find out if anyone was still inside the vehicle, according to the release.

The officers searched the area but were unable to locate the driver, according to the report.
