Don't fall victim to scammers claiming to be Entergy, social security, grandchild, CCSO says

The Columbia County Sheriff’s office has received multiple notifications of new scams.

The first reported scam involves the a claimed Entergy rep claiming that if a person does not pay their bill “today over the phone” by sending money through Walmart, that the company will shut down one’s power.

“Entergy has several ways of contacting you and they will not ask for you to ever send money via Walmart,” said a Thursday CCSO warning.

Another scam involves false reports of a grandchild calling either from “jail” or “hospital” in need of immediate funds.

“Please verify with your actual grandchildren if it is really them,” the CCSO warning said.

Yet another scam claims that one’s social security number has been compromised or suspended and the scammer needs the victim to verify their identity.

“The Social Security Administration is not going to call you about your social security number,” CCSO added in this week’s warning.

“Please do not fall victim to these scams!” the Sheriff’s Office said.
