Keith Watson, a 2019 Magnolia High School graduate, has been notified by the College Board Advanced Placement Program that he has earned National AP Scholar recognition. National AP Scholar recognition is granted to students in the United States who receive an average score of at least a four on all AP Exams taken, and scores of four or higher on eight or more of these exams. This is the first time that a MHS student has earned this prestigious national honor.

The AP program enables willing and academically prepared students to pursue college-level studies while still in high school.

The AP program consists of thirty-eight courses in seven subject categories in which high schools may choose to offer and the corresponding exams that are administered once a year. Magnolia High School offers thirteen AP Courses in the subject areas of English, math, science, history, and art.

Each AP course is modeled on a comparable introductory college course in the subject. Each course culminates in a standardized college-level assessment given in May each year at testing locations all over the world. Schools must be authorized by the AP Course Audit to offer approved AP courses and use the AP designation.

Taking AP courses and exams can help students stand out on college applications. AP courses on a student’s transcript shows that they have challenged themselves with the most rigorous courses available to them. Success on an AP Exam shows that they are ready for college-level coursework.

Most four-year colleges and universities in the United States—as well as many institutions in more than 100 other countries—grant students credit, placement, or both for qualifying AP Exam scores. The exams are scored on a scale of 1 to 5 by college and university professors and experienced AP teachers.

The College Board’s Advanced Placement Program (AP) is a collaborative community of AP teachers and students, states, districts, schools, colleges, and universities committed to the daily work of developing college-level knowledge and skills and have been delivering excellence in education to millions of students across the country since 1955.

Keith Watson is currently a freshman attending Louisiana Tech University in Ruston, La. He is the son of Angela and Ronnie Watson.
