Sheriff’s Office issues spring safety tips, offers security for school, community events

The Columbia County Sheriff’s Office has issued its annual spring safety tips and driving guide for area residents. The agency has also indicated that it can provide security and traffic oversight at upcoming community and school events, if needed.

The CCSO message to citizens states:

As winter comes to a close and we welcome spring, we at the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office remember that spring is a great time in our community — a new baseball season begins, spring break is upon us, and graduation draws near for our students, as well as the 30th Annual Magnolia Blossom Festival in May. We enjoy celebrating these good times in our community.

If our officers — including our reserve officers — can help with traffic control or security monitoring at school-related or community events, please call us well in advance of a scheduled event. If at all possible, we will help provide coverage for your school-related or community events.

We also want to remind you that with the warmer weather, children may be playing near our county roads. Please take extra caution and slow down when driving through residential neighborhoods. And remember, children learn by watching us. If you’re traveling with a child, please model good driving habits. They should include: wearing your seat belt; obeying the speed limit, slowing near schools and neighborhoods (and explain why this is important); Not texting or checking social media while driving; and making sure children are in the correct car seat.

“Thank you for keeping our roads and our citizens safe,” the message said in closing, “and we look forward to the great times that spring will bring!”
