Panthers fall 10-0 to Billies; home opener set for today

Magnolia managed only one hit Tuesday afternoon as it was blanked 10-0 by Monticello in its 4A Region 8 Conference baseball opener.

The Panthers’ (3-2, 0-1) only hit against Arkansas Razorback commit Nick Griffin was a single by Garrett Clark. The Billies (5-2, 3-0) stayed perfect in conference play and collected 10 hits off a pair of Magnolia pitchers.

Besides the one hit given up, Griffin struck out eight batters and walked only two during his five innings on the mound.

Magnolia’s Connor Harrington was the losing pitcher, giving up six hits, six runs (five earned), and a walk. Tanner Nielsen relieved him, giving up four hits, four earned runs and a walk. Both pitchers struck out a batter.

The Panthers committed four errors in the game.

The Billies led 1-0 after the first inning and erupted for five runs in the second and four in the third.

Bobby Beeson’s Panthers will look to bounce back this afternoon when they host the Star City Bulldogs. First-pitch at Panther Field is set for 4:30 p.m. Star City (4-4, 1-1) is coming off a pair of losses in the Pine Bluff 7th Annual Allen Jeter Classic.

In other league games today, the Billies will look to extend their winning streak to four games when they play at Camden Fairview, who is 1-0 in league play. Hamburg will travel to Crossett.
