Panthers, Billies set to play conference baseball game today

Magnolia will be playing baseball today at Panther Field, hosting the Monticello Billies at 4:30 p.m. The two teams were scheduled to meet on Monday, but the weather moved action to today. The game against Genoa Central will be rescheduled.

It willl be the Panthers’ (3-1) first 4A Region 8 Conference game, while the Billies (4-2, 2-0 4A Region 8) will be playing their third league contest. Monticello has beaten Crossett 8-1 and Star City 14-4, but fell to Magnolia 10-3 in the Nashville tournament.

The Panthers, after going 3-0 in the Nashville tournament, suffered a 9-5 nonconference loss at Hot Springs Lakeside last week.

Garrett Clark led at the plate with three hits. Kevin Zhao, Dayton Dickson, Adam Pieratt and Eli Fields had one hit each. Connor Harrington, Zhao, Pieratt, Halen Sanders and Fields each drew walks.

In softball, the Magnolia Lady Panthers (6-1, 1-0) picked up threee wins in the El Dorado tournament last weekend, knocking off Hamburg 10-2, Harmony Grove 8-0 and Smackover 1-0. Last week, they used a solid fifth inning to blow past Crossett 10-2 in their 4A Region 8 Conference. The Lady Panthers are currently on a four-game winning streak.

Caitlyn McCormack, Carlin Whaley, CB Souter, Kendall Cheatham, Jade Snider, Bailey Ladner, Brittany Yates and Cara Taylor had had good games at the plate and in the circle during the recent games.

The Lady Panthers decided to forfeit their championship game in the El Dorado tournament to support the Panther basketball team at Hot Springs in the state basketball tournament.

The Lady Panthers were also scheduled to battle Monticello on Monday.
