LETTER TO THE EDITOR

Dear Editor,

As a teacher, I support my colleagues in Los Angelos USD to the letter. I understand their frustration. We need smaller class sizes. No educator should have 5 sections of over 40 students. We need more librarians and nurses.Incidentally, Library Media is one of my teaching areas. Smaller class sizes enable educators to do their job more effectively. Greater attention can be given to those needing special help, and smaller class sizes will help prevent discipline problems, as well. With smaller class sizes, my colleagues there can quicker and easier zero in on what concepts their students are weakest on. I wish my colleagues, in the US second largest school system godspeed in their endeavors, and others need to realize that we became teachers, because they like teaching. One has to like teaching to be able to do it. There is too much secondary thinking in education. That is-“if I can’t make it in business, I’ll teach school”.

Also, educators must be able to check in their personal problems at the classroom door. Hire more teachers and librarians, reduce class sizes for a better school, and my heart goes out to my colleagues in the “City of Angels.”

Sincerely,

Leslie Putman of El Dorado
