McGee, Rehfuss earn honors

Southern Arkansas University baseball programs had players named as the conference’s players of the week.

In baseball, the recipient was freshman Brett McGee. He receives the award one week after teammate Cooper King won it following opening weekend.

In tennis, Stuart Rehfuss earned the men’s accolade.

McGee and the Mulerider baseball team went 2-2, with wins over Arkansas-Fort Smith and Missouri Western.

For the week, the freshman catcher went 8-18 from the plate, including a 3-5 performance against Arkansas-Fort Smith that included a double and a grand slam, as well as scoring two runs.

In his next game against Northwest Missouri, McGee went 2-5 with a triple and three RBIs.

McGee went 1-4 against Delta State and 2-4 against Missouri Western, drawing a walk and scoring a run in the Muleriders’ last game against the Griffons in the HSU Invitational.

For the season, McGee is hitting .417, with four of his 10 hits being for extra bases; he has scored four runs, batting in another seven runs and walked three times while only striking out six times this season.

The Muleriders start open conference play this weekend as they take the trip back to Arkadelphia to take on Henderson State in a three-game series.

On Friday, the teams will play a single game beginning at 6 p.m., followed by Saturday’s doubleheader that will begin at 1 p.m.

Rehfuss, a sophomore from Xanten, Germany, led the Muleriders to three team wins as they defeated Spring Hill College, Christian Brothers and Rhodes College in Memphis.

Rehfuss played with Aleksandr Pokusaev to score three wins from the No. 1 doubles position.

Playing as SAU’s No. 1 singles player, he went 3-0, including a pair of straight-set triumphs.

Another Mulerider tennis player nominated for the GAC Tennis Player of the Week honor was Joanna Nowakowska, Jr., who picked up three singles wins and a pair of doubles victories.
