MHS student, senior football player killed in Saturday night car accident

A Magnolia High School student was killed and an unnamed minor was injured Saturday night in a single-car accident near the intersection of Columbia Rd. 53 and Columbia Rd. 154 in the Rudd’s Crossing Community near Magnolia.

Identified as Kendrell Jamal Harris by Reid Funeral Home, the 17-year-old MHS student and senior Panther football player, according to an Arkansas State Police fatal crash summary, at 11:17 p.m. Aug. 24 was traveling northbound on Columbia 53, when the “driver failed to negotiate a curve” and the 2008 Ford truck “left the roadway, struck a tree, and overturned.”

Harris, the driver, was pronounced dead at the scene by Columbia County Coroner Randy Reid, the report said. The injured male passenger was taken to Magnolia Regional Medical Center.

Weather conditions were clear and the roadway was dry, according to Arkansas State Trooper Trevor Dew’s on-scene investigative summary.

The funeral home has not yet released a service date or time.

According to a source at Magnolia Schools, the coaches, along with Fellowship of Christian Athletes, were set to meet with the Panther football team Sunday afternoon and offer ministry services. A prayer service is also set to take place.

Harris, who wore jersey number 39, was a wide receiver, according to MaxPreps.

The football team is scheduled to play Warren at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday at SAU’s Wilkins Stadium.

Magnolia Schools through a Facebook post Sunday night released the following: "We would like to extend our heartfelt condolences to the Kendrell Harris family as they mourn their tragic loss. Keep them lifted up in your prayers in the days ahead."
