Magnolia’s Long to be part of All-Star coaching staff

Magnolia head basketball coach Dyun Long, who will become the district’s athletic director after June 30, has been selected as a 2019 Arkansas High School Coaches Association All-Star Coach. This year’s games will be Saturday, June 22 at the Jeff Farris Center on the University of Central Arkansas campus in Conway.

The announcement was made last week by the Arkansas Activities Association.

David Clark of Marion will be the head coach of the East All-Stars and will be assisted Long, Tuckerman’s Josh Bateman and Izard County’s Kyle McCandlis.

Heading up the West All-Star boys will be Beau Thompson of Farmington, assisted by Steve Lynch of Jasper, Scotty Pennington of Lake Hamilton and James Smith of Ashdown. Pennington is a former Southern Arkansas University Muleriders and Emerson Pirate.

In March, Long led Magnolia to its first state basketball championship in 22 years back when the Panthers won the Class 4A State Title in Hot Springs. He has coach the Panthers since 2007.

The Smackover native has been spent his entire 23-year coaching career in the Magnolia School District and is a graduate of Southern Arkansas University.

Long led the Panthers to a 24-5 overall record and 11-1 mark in the 4A Region 8 Conference. Magnolia’s only losses during the season were twice to Nevada, twice to Monticello and a double overtime setback to Ashdown.
