Columbia, Lafayette county retired teachers meet

The Columbia and Lafayette retired teachers met Wednesday, January 16, at 1 pm. at the First Baptist Bus Station. President Elizabeth Tye called the meeting to order and led members in the Collect and the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag.

Ann Hughes introduced the speaker, Harriet Alexander. Mrs. Alexander is a Nurse Practitioner and has worked for 25 years with her husband, Dr. John Alexander. Her topic was “Healthy Eating and Wellness.”

She explained that diet and physical exercise go together. Heart disease is the leading cause of death in both men and women. Fruit, vegetables, nuts, and fish are great foods! She recommended 150 minutes of exercise per week. She said natural foods with no additives are better. For a well-balanced diet to lose weight, she suggested Weight Watchers.

Following the program, business was conducted. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and approved. Treasurer Bonnie Flurry reported a balance in the treasury of $2,291,37 in the bank. This chapter now has 96 paid members.

It was announced that Dr. Menendez will present a program entitled “Stop the Bleed” on January 23 at 12 p.m. and again at 5:15 p.m.

The death of Melba Bussell was reported.

The meeting adjourned for refreshments served by Belva Smith and Mary McMahen.
