SAU opens basketball season

LANCASTER, Texas – Senior Draylan Perkins went for 19 points and added six rebounds and a pair of steals to lead the Southern Arkansas Muleriders to a 64-59 victory over the University of Mary Saturday afternoon at the GAC/NSIC Crossover Challenge in Lancaster, Texas.

On Friday, SAU fell 75-67 to Augustana.

The Muleriders (1-1) led by eight points at the intermission against UMary and saw their second half lead cut down to four points with a minute and a half to play, before Perkins knocked down a pair of free throws in the final seconds to put Southern Arkansas in the win column.

Following Perkins in scoring was CJ Elkins with 14 points and DeVante Brooks adding 13 points.

Against Augustana, Elkins finished with a game-high 19 points.

Jalen Brooks followed with 11, while Frank Royles and Aaron Lucas had 10 apiece.

Southern Arkansas’ home opener is set for 7:30 p.m. Tuesday against Southeastern Baptist College.

Lady Muleriders

fall twice

The SAU Lady Muleriders (0-2) lost their two games in the season-opening GAC/MIAA Crossover at the W.T. Watson Athletic Center.

The fell to Lindenwood 61-40 on Saturday and 64-55 to Lincoln University on Friday.

On Saturday, SAU could not contain Lindenwood forward Kallie Bildner, who scored 23 points and added 16 rebounds.

Ariana Guinn led the scoring for the Lady Mulerider eight points. Jerica Bell grabbed six rebounds to go along with four points in 18 minutes, and Erin Brinkley scored four points and contributed five rebounds.

The Lady Muleriders had nine of 10 players score on the night; however, none scored more than eight points. Against Lincoln, Brette Wacha led in scoring with 12 points. She had two 3-pointers. Lincoln’s Zoi Thompson led all scores with 18. The Lady Muleriders will also host Southeastern Baptist College Tuesday, beginning at 5:30 p.m.
