GAC recognizes long jumper, sprinter

Southern Arkansas junior long jumper and sprinter Karonce Higgins has been named as the initial recipient of the Great American Conference’s Men’s Track Field Athlete of the Week.

A native of Searcy, Higgins garnered the honor in response to him opening up his spring season emphatically as he set a NCAA Division II provisional mark in the long jump at the Marc Randle Classic back on March 2.

At the Marc Randle, Higgins registered a mark of 7.29m (23’ 11”) and finished second overall in the event.

Additionally, that mark by Higgins is currently the second-best in DII outdoor track and field.

Higgins then followed up that initial long jump performance by winning the event at the UCA Spring Opener with a distance of 6.81m (22’ 4.25”).

A versatile athlete, Higgins has also taken part in both the 4x100m and the 4x400m relay teams.

So far, the 4x400m team, in which he is the third leg, have won twice and the 4x100m team, in which he is the anchor leg, have one victory.

The 4x400m relay team Higgins is a part of is currently the sixth-fastest in DII while the 4x100m is currently 13th.
