Seniors need to make their voices heard.

AARP is circulating petitions asking its members to sign and mail them to our state’s Congressional delegation.

While we do not join such petition drives and probably would not be in agreement with all of AARP’s political stances, the need for senior citizens to make their voices heard is important, especially considering our area’s large aging population.

In this case, AARP is encouraging seniors to contact U.S. Rep. Bruce Westerman, Sen. Tom Cotton and Sen. Joe Boozman concerning three issues.

The organization asks seniors to write the three to urge them to oppose any attempts to cut Medicare benefits, fight the increasing cost of prescription drugs and to strenghten Social Security.

While it would seem to many that these would be no-brainers, with the current divisive and bitter political climate in Washington, D.C., the future of any governmental program could be a shaky proposition.

If you are among the many in our commubity concerned about the future of their retirement years, following AARP’s lead by making our delegation in Washington aware of how you feel, on these and others issues, is good advice.
