Panthers, Blue Jays matchup should be a good one Friday

Area fans will probably witness an exciting game when Magnolia takes the short trip to Nevada Friday night.

Both the Panthers (4-1) and Blue Jays (9-2) are on winning streaks, and Nevada hasn’t lost on its home court in two battles so far this season.

The county neighbors will in the third contest of the night, following a freshman and varsity girls’ battle.

The first game will start at 5 p.m.

The Panthers have won their three previous games, including Tuesday’s 61-50 victory over El Dorado.

They easily handled Benton and Smackover on the court, but fell by two points in double overtime in their only loss.

Dyun Long’s team is led by a mixture of young and older players.

Freshmen Derrian Ford and Colby Garland have started each night, while veterans Kadyn Roach, Braelyn Beasley and Markeveon Strickland makes up the rest of the line up.

Long also utilized at least four other athletes off the bench.

The Blue Jays have only two seniors on the roster, but the centerpiece of the team is 6-foot-7 sophomore Kobe Garland.

Nevada has had little trouble scoring, as they have piled up 82 or more points in three of its games.

On the other hand, the Panthers are averaging 62.4 points per outing and giving up an average of 52.8 points per contest.

Magnolia continues to run through its nonconference schedule. They will host Arkansas High a week from Friday night and compete in the Camden Fairview Holiday Classic Dec. 27-29.

The Blue Jays will also play in the Camden Fairview Classic and could possibly meet up with the Panthers again.

Bobby Mullins’ Blue Jays are a member of the Class 1A Region 8 Confenence, that also includes, Dermott, Bradley, Taylor, Strong and Hermitage.

Magnolia will compete in the Class 4A Region 8 Conference, that also consists of Star City, Monticello, Warren, Hamburg, Camden Fairview and Crossett.

Classifications won’t be a factor when the Panthers and Blue Jays tangle Friday night.

The Lady Panthers are 4-3 on the season, while the Lady Blue Jays are 2-5.

While the boys’ teams are hoping to extend their winning streaks, the girls’ teamhope to add another victory in their win column.
