Come Monday in Magnolia, buses will run, butterflies will flourish in stomachs from first day jitters, and parents will find reprieve as the 18-19 school year will begin. Before classes resume, there is opportunity for parents and students alike to meet the teachers they will be working with throughout the year. From 9 a.m. - noon on Friday, Aug. 17, teachers and staff members will be available and all parents are encouraged to visit to establish a positive relationship to start the year. This may be the best chance to get a little one on one time with your students teacher and is recommended as such so that if any problems come up during the year, they can be easily handled accordingly. From Ms. Nepivoda, a third year English teacher, first year at Magnolia High School;

“Positive parent and teacher relationships are important for both the triumphs and struggles within the classroom. Parents need recognition just as much as the students do. Students need to know that their efforts are recognized so they can feel accomplished when they do well. Students’ behaviors and work ethic reflect that of the parents. When a teacher calls home to brag about a kid, that parents feels as much joy as the student does; it makes the parent feel like they had a part in their kid’s success. As for the tough times, a teacher will always wonder what is going on at home first when a student is struggling. Calling the parent about a situation or a behavior is not to get the student in trouble, but for the teacher to show that he/she cares and to seek a resolution. Many times kids have the best role models at home. Home to every student is different. Two parent homes, single parent homes, and every kind of home you can think of is not necessarily a bad home. Some parents lack the knowledge of (how) to help their child in school. A teacher can provide that through insight of resources for parents. Communication between the parent and teacher is what bridges the gap to student-teacher relationships. As a result, teacher-student relationships is what makes learning desirable and achievable.”

It is noticed that Magnolia School District has a major focus on the relationship between parents and teachers this year. It is imperative that parents, grand parents, all family and friends take advantage of the tools provided to them in order to see success from their kin. We at the Banner-News applaud MSD and their efforts to drive successful relationships between teachers, students, and parents in order to find success.
