Team battles in newly-formed baseball league

Magnolia recently joined a newly-developed junior high baseball league for 7th and 8th graders.

The league is geared to develop players to compete and contribute at the high school level by utilizing regulation infield distances of 90-feet base paths and 60-feet, 6 inches from pitcher’s mound to home plate.

The league currently consists of El Dorado, Harmony Grove, Smackover, Crossett, Drew Central, and Magnolia.Several teams are sponsored by their respective school district, which now offers the sport in the junior high athletic program.

The Magnolia team is currently not associated with the Magnolia School District.

The seven-week season consisted of seven doubleheaders and Magnolia finished with an overall record of 10-4.

The decisions were four wins over Harmony Grove; 4-0 outcome with Smackover; 1-1 split with Crossett; and 1-3 versus El Dorado. The team outscored their opponents 103-75.

The 14-member team was selected from a tryout in January and includes 8th graders Jay Todd Baker, Seth Edwards, Tanner Edwards, and Cade Key. Seventh-graders are Porter Alston, Blake Barker, Dalen Blanchard, Cade Browning, Hunter Buford, Devin Dunn, Jacob Hebert, Ashton Hunter, Isaac Vickers, and Kenny Zhao. The coaches are Scotty Carmody and Landon Simpson.

The local team thanked SAU for the use of Goodheart Field to host home games.
