Girl Scout cookies sales begin Saturday

LITTLE ROCK - It’s that time again! Girl Scout cookies go on sale Saturday, Jan. 21.

According to Leesa Stephens, Columbia County service unit director for Girl Scouts-Diamonds Council, local Girl Scouts will begin taking orders on Saturday, Jan. 21, and continue through Saturday, Feb. 4.

Everyone has a special place in their heart for Girl Scout cookies - not only because they’re delicious - but because purchasing Girl Scout Cookies helps girls fulfill their dreams, follow their passions, and change the world. This year marks the 100th anniversary of the first known sale of cookies by Girl Scouts. A century ago, girls started participating in what would evolve into the largest entrepreneurial training program for girls in the world - the Girl Scout cookie program.

By participating in this program, girls learn the essential skills they need to become effective leaders, manage finances, and gain self-sufficiency and confidence in handling money. Girl Scout cookies not only help Girl Scouts earn money for fun, educational activities and community projects, but also play a huge role in transforming girls into G.I.R.L.’s (Go-getters, Innovators, Risk-takers, Leaders) as they learn essential life skills that will stay with them forever. As the Girl Scout cookie program developed and evolved, it became a vehicle for teaching five essential skills - goal setting, decision making, money management, people skills and business ethics.

Girl Scouts-Diamonds of Arkansas, Oklahoma and Texas serves over 9,000 girls and 3,700 volunteers. It encompasses all counties in Arkansas except Crittenden, and includes Adair, LeFlore and Sequoyah Counties in Oklahoma as well as Bowie and Cass Counties in Texas. Girl Scouting builds girls of courage, confidence and character, who make the world a better place.

Today there are two commercial bakers who make the popular confections, including ABC Bakers and Little Brownie Bakers. To commemorate this banner year for the organization, the highly-anticipated Girl Scout S’mores cookie - a crunchy graham sandwich cookies with chocolate and marshmallowy filling - will now be available. The new S’mores cookie will join the classics including Thin Mints, Trefoils, Samoas, Tagalongs, Do-si-dos, Savannah Smiles, and the gluten-free Toffee-tastic. The Thin Mint has kept its spot as the top seller in the nation, while the Samoa is the most popular cookie in the Girl Scouts-Diamonds regions.

Stephens said cookies remain at $4 per box, with the exception of the gluten-free variety and the new S’mores cookie, which are priced at $5 per box.

Cookies are expected to be delivered the last week in February or first of March.

Anyone who has not been contacted by a Girl Scout by Feb. 4 may call (870) 234-7662 to order cookies.
