MJHS freshman Cubs blank Cardinals; 8th graders score twice but come up short

The Magnolia freshmen Cubs were unstoppable Thursday night as they rolled to a 27-0 victory over Camden Fairview.

It was their third consecutive conference victory and moved their overall record to 3-1-1.

The younger Cubs fell behind by two touchdowns, but were unable to battle back. They lost 14-12, moving their overall record to 2-2-1.

Behind the running of Kadyn Roach and Keithan Brown, the freshman Cubs took their first possession to the end zone.

Roach scampered 43 yards to the 11 and Brown later scored from the 2 with 4:31 on the clock. Garrett Clark's PAT made it 7-0.

Magnolia threatened again in the first period, but fumbled the ball away on a fourth-and-goal at the 1.

In the second period with six minutes to play, quarterback Payton Campbell and Korey Fulton connected on a 39-yard pass play.

Brown then got his second touchdown on a 2-yard run. Garrett's PAT made it 14-0.

With 2:02 remaining in the first half, Brown broke loose on a 62-yard touchdown run to make it 21-0.

In the third period at the 4:20 mark, Roach burst up the middle and scored on a 72-yard run. A failed PAT attempt left the score at 27-0.

Three minutes later, Roach had a 54-yard touchdown run called back on a penalty.

Magnolia threatened in the final period after Brown carried the ball 21 yards to the 4. The Cubs fumbled a few plays later and the Cardinals took over at the 11.

In the 8th grade game, Camden Fairview scored twice in the second period on runs of 44 and 14 yards. The Cardinals converted one two-point attempt and led 14-0.

In the closing seconds of the first half, the Cubs managed to narrow the gap.

With 24 ticks on the clock, quarterback Braelyn Beasley threw a 35-yard pass to Sidtraveous Hampton.

After an incompletion pass, Beasley threw a 30-yard touchdown pass to Hampton in the corner of the end zone.

Hampton went up between two defenders to make the grab and made the score 14-6 with 6.2 seconds on the clock. The Cubs failed to convert the two-point conversion.

In the third period, Beasley and Halen Sanders hooked up on a 50-yard pass play that ended at the 1.

With 14.8 second on the clock, Maurice Strickland scored, but another failed two-point conversion left the score at 14-12.

The Cubs threatened late in the game, but were turned back when Camden Fairview intercepted a pass at the 10.

Magnolia returns home this week and will host Hot Springs on Thursday.
