Lady Muleriders fall twice in softball Sunday

The Southern Arkansas Lady Mulerider softball team suffered a doubleheader loss to Southeastern Oklahoma on Sunday afternoon as the Savage Storm collected 33 hits and 27 runs to take the doubleheader and the Great American Conference series, three games to one.

The two team split on Saturday, with the Lady Muleriders winning 9-7 in the first contest, but falling 3-1 in the nightcap.

In game one Sunday, the Lady Muleriders (17-14, 9-10 GAC) trailed 2-0 heading into the bottom of the opening inning, but Audrey Farfan blasted a two-out, full-count, bases loaded offering into the left field meadow for a grand slam and an early 4-2 SAU lead.

Runs did not come at a premium on Palm Sunday as the Savage Storm answered with four runs in the second to take a 6-4 lead, before Southern Arkansas plated a single run in the bottom half to cut the SE lead to one.

Both teams managed to scratch a run in the third inning, but would be unable to score in the fourth and fifth as Southeastern Oklahoma led 7-6 into the sixth inning. A huge five run, six hit inning for the Savage Storm put the first game of the twin bill on ice as Southeastern Oklahoma grabbed game one 13-7.

The Lady Muleriders produced an eight-run, second inning in the series finale courtesy of a Courtney Hudgins sacrifice fly, two-run singles by Ashton Atwell and Taylor Guin and by a three-run homerun from the bat of Darian Harris as SAU finished a run shy of duplicating their nine-run first inning in Saturday's series opener.

Southeastern Oklahoma slowly crept back into the game by scoring three runs in the third and five runs in the fourth to tie the game at eight. A solo homerun by the Savage Storm in the sixth gave them their first lead of the contest. After an intentional walk to Audrey Farfan to load the bases with two outs, Guin laced the first pitch of her at-bat down the right field line for a two-out double, plating Sydney Johnson and Atwell to give SAU a 10-9 lead.

The Savage Storm would rally for the last time in the seventh to take a 14-10 lead and capture the GAC series.

Farfan finished game one a triple shy of the cycle in a 4-for-4 effort with four RBIs, while Guin finished her day with five hits and five RBIs.

In the finale, Atwell went 3-for-5 with a pair of RBIs and a pair of runs scored.

The Lady Muleriders return to action this weekend with a Great American Conference series against East Central University in Ada, Oklahoma, on April 3 and 4. First pitch of the doubleheader on Friday is scheduled for 2 p.m., while the series concludes on Saturday with a double feature beginning at noon.
