Panthers, Lions play each other in scrimmage

HAMBURG - Despite losing 7-0 on the scoreboard, Magnolia was simply glad to be playing someone other than themselves on the football field.

The Panthers and Hamburg Lions met Thursday night in a controlled scrimmage game that was sanctioned by the Arkansas Activities Association.

The Panthers' varsity squad, with played two quarters, gave up a touchdown with 25 seconds to play in the second period.

The junior varsity played the third and final quarter, with neither team managing to score. The Panthers did missed a short field goal when the ball hit the goal post.

"The No. 1 thing is that everyone is healthy," said Magnolia head coach John Panter.

His team's annual Red-White scrimmage was canceled last week and Thursday's battle was the first game-like situation for the Panthers.

"Another major concern for us was to play an opponent other than ourselves, and to see a different offense and defense," said Panter

Though Thursday's action was a controlled scrimmage, Panter said there were many game situations.

"I thought our defense played really well and I was pleased with their effort," said the coach.

Panter agreed that it will take that unit some time to come together.

"We lost nine people on the defense side of the ball and it's hard to replace that. But to come out and have a performance like we had tonight is very promising," he mentioned.

Offensively, the coach said he was a little disappointed in the protection up front and some of the execution of plays.

"Everything comes down to fundamentals. That's something we will watch for very closely on the films and see what need to improve," said Panter.

Overall, the coach said he was pleased with the scrimmage and the progress his team is making.

He said the Panthers are eager to start another football season.

"The kids are tired of seeing the same faces in front of them," added Panter.
