Diary for Friday

A woman living on W. Monroe St. called Thursday to say a man hit a pole last night and knocked the pole completely out of the ground. She said the power company truck came out and put the pole back up, there were police cars everywhere, and they took the motorist to the hospital.

A caller said she received a call from someone claiming to be from the IRS and saved the message. She said the caller told her this was the IRS's final notification and they were going to sue her, and gave her a number to call back. It was 102-378-1947. Caller said she dialed the number but got no answer.

“I never have been bothered by the IRS,” she said. Caller said the message sounded like it was a tape spliced together, with hesitation in spots, and the woman had a British accent.

Caller said she was aware there were scam artists calling claiming to be from the IRS, and knew the IRS did not call people; correspondence was handled by mail.
